Camp Description:
The SMARTS Summer Institute offers arts interested and talented students grades Prek-12, an opportunity to focus intensively on the arts and creativity and work under the guidance of dedicated master artists and arts educators. Recognized across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts since 1986, the SMARTS Summer Institute cultivates creativity and fosters diversity, embracing all ability levels. The Preschool program is a two week half-day "It's All About Play!" experience. The Elementary and Junior Levels offer students an intensive four week multi-arts experience. The students explore Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts through daily classes in each discipline. The two week Senior Level offers students an opportunity to major in one discipline - Drama/Film/Video or Music Boot Camp. The SMARTS Summer Institute philosophy is about PROCESS - the classroom is a place of inquiry where both the student and the teacher are learners who can experience and make connections to a variety of mediums and disciplines. Dynamic challenges occur every day. Each summer the faculty and students, all grade levels, incorporate a central theme into their curriculum. A unique aspect of the summer program is the planned and sometimes spontaneous collaborations between the arts disciplines. The theme provides fertile ground to make these creative interconnections. Students benefit greatly from both the skill/technique development and the interdisciplinary focus. Some past themes have been "Inside Out", "Walls and Bridges", "Time", " Dreams", "Transformation", "Environmental Images", "Great American Masters", "Tolerance", "Humor","Flight", and "The World".
